TIFFANY FAVRILE LAMPS & GLASS AND HIS RIVALS

Since The first Tiffany exhibition held in modern times ( 1955 ) at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, the urge to collect Tiffany Favrile Glass, Tiffany lamps, Tiffany Pottery, Tiffany desk items, and Tiffany enamels has become increasingly stronger. The first pinnacle was reached in 1979 at the sale of the Gluck Tiffany Collection in New York City. Since then, Tiffany Favrile Glass and Tiffany lamp values have seen ups and downs which coincide directly with the economy; yet remain the leading favorite with American Art Nouveau collectors; and they always climb back up to surpass their previous high.

Fine examples of Quezal, Durand, Steuben, and Kew Blas are also enjoying prime spots in the world of the art glass collecting. Like Tiffany Favrile glass, they too are getting more difficult to locate; especially the more complex and elaborately decorated examples. The superior examples of these art glass makers have been, like Tiffany, sought after by top collectors for many years

STEUBEN GLASSWORKS, CORNING, NEW YORK

Frederick Carder founded the Steuben Glassworks in Corning, New York in 1903. Named after Steuben county, the initial purpose was to manufacture crystal blanks for the Hawkes Cut Glass Company. It did not take Carder long to become bored with this production and set his hand to making colored Steuben glass as he had at Stevens & Williams in England. His Multi-facted production included: Aurene, Intarsia, Verre de Soie, Lamp shades, Acid Cut Backs, Engraved crystal, Tiles, Lost wax, and a vast range of other artistically acclaimed objects.

Although Steuben began making only clear crystal in the mid 1930's, their Aurenes, Lamp shades, Lost wax , Acid Cut Backs, etc. are very much sought after by collectors today.

QUEZAL ART GLASS & DECORATING COMPANY, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

Founded by two former Tiffany employees, The Quezal Art Glass & Decorating Company of Brooklyn opened its doors in 1902, and for the next 22+ years produced a wide range of outstanding Vases and Lamp Shades. Today Quezal Lamp Shades are highly prized by collectors and are often mistaken for Steuben or Durand if they are unsigned. The vases, although sometimes bolder in decoration than Steuben seem to remain quietly classical in form like those of Steuben. It was Tiffany whose loose and carefree shapes truly conformed to the ideals of Art Nouveau, while Steuben, Quezal, Durand, and Kew Blas remained conservative.
